LIST OF SIGHTS:

For those contemplating a trip and having a bit of time, here is a list of sights and the coordinates to the parking lots or trailheads. Few if any sites offer coordinates, yet it's the quickest most accurate way to get around with virtually every modern electronic map used by laptop, cell phone or GPS giving you the location. I've limited it to 4 digits as that gives accuracy to about 20'.

Glanni Foss: 64.7559, -21.5483 Waterfall less than a mile from Grabrok. Very short hike to the falls.

Stykkisholmskirkja Church: 65.0736, -22.7227 Very modern. Worth a quick look.

Lighthouse Sugandisey: 65.0797, -22.7257 A nice short hike to the top of a low hill with views of the harbor.



D2: STYKKISHOLMUR - PATREKSFJORDUR

If possible we suggest taking the ferry across here if planning on towards Ísafjörður. Had we to do it over again, we would have skipped Patreksfjörður and Flateyri as there is not too much do do there, but the scenery is nice.

Ck out the grounded fishing boats around Patreksfjordur.


D3: PATREKSFJORDUR - FLATEYRI
Pat. - Flat 2h44m/169 direct.
Pat. - Cliffs - Flat: 4h34m/261 (About an hour more if go to beach.)

Dynjandi waterfall: 65.73666, -23.20879 Great waterfalls and worth the 1/4 hike to the base.

From Frommers: Today's journey is characterized by endless but dramatic fjords and towering mountains on your way to Ísafjörður, 66.059884, -23.171824 the "Capital of the West Fjords" and the biggest settlement in the region. There you'll find some of the most historic houses in Iceland, dating back to the mid-18th century.

Hvammstangi & Icelandic Seal Center: Seal watching 65.3957, -20.9484.

Pingeyrar Church: 65.5547, -20.4039 Worth a look? 14min/6km oow. 1/2hr rt. Very small but nice stone church. $5 ea.

Borgarvirki natural fortress 65.474918, -20.597524 14min/9km oow. Worth seeing if time.

Textile museum, Blonduos 65.66227, -20.2932 might spend more time at the Glaumbaer museum below.

Vidimyrarkirkja church: 65.53887, -19.47051 sm but neat. Only a minute off of the road. $5 ea. Just look from the outside unless have a lot of time.

Glaumbaer Folk Museum: 65.61069, -19.50352 Shouldn't miss if in area. $15 ea.

3h28m/254km via Siglufjordur. Suppose to be very pretty drive.

Hofsos 65.8977, -19.4150 Older town with some reconstructions.
Basalt columns:65.8953, -19.4113 walk past pools toward the beach.

Trollaskagi Peninsula: Troll Peninsula, is suppose to be scenic. On hwy 76 on way to Siglufjordur.

Siglufjörður: 66.14703, -18.91286. Picturesque. Ck out the town & surrounds.

Herring museum: 66.14697, -18.9130. Only open 1-5pm in Sept. http://www.sild.is/en
Stroll the town.

Akureyri Church both here 65.6800, -18.0923.

Shopping and city center roughly 65.6821, -18.0887.

Lystigardur Botanical Garden Very nice: 65.6744, -18.0934 http://www.lystigardur.akureyri.is/

Góðafoss Waterfall 65.68412, -17.5485 Looks great. Close to Hwy 1. Another waterfall

Geitafoss is just 1000' downstream & might be worth a look.

Skútustaðagígar: 65.56945, -17.03687 Nice short hike out to a cluster of craters/small volcano with views.

Kalfarstrond & Hofdi park: p206 65.570816, -16.953620 Might be too extensive of a hike. Could stop and ck out on the way to our hotel.

Overlook: 65.5752, -16.94839

Dimmuborgir 65.5917, -16.9124 is a lava field close to our hotel. Could do after checking in on way to dinner.

Hverfjall volcano: 65.61239, -16.8759 is a volcano very close to our hotel. Looks real interesting & try not to miss. See when can. A short 300' climb to the crater and then perhaps 1-2 miles around?



D7: TO VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK
Hotel - Jukul..NP: 1h12m/83km (X2 =: 2h24m rt)

Myvatnsstofa Visitor Centre 65.64136, -16.91136. Right in town & next to grocery store.

Reykjahlíð Church 65.64569, -16.91655 Might be worth seeing the lava fields and foundation before taking off.

Dettifoss West side 65.8132, -16.4011 southern falls.

Raudholar Circle/Hljóðaklettar : 65.93132,-16.54708 about 5 miles before the Jokul. visitors cntr. It looks nice but not really great. Might be chance to test our 4WD for a short distance. Printout.

Jökulsárgljúfur: It's part of Vatnajökull National Park 66.0284, -16.4881 Visitors center.

Through the Woods Trail: 66.02876,-16.48868 Looks like a long southern hike in mostly open area bordering the woods. Ask about this. Starts close to the visitors center. Printout.

Eyjan Hill Trail: 66.02609,-16.49625 Looks like you can get to the top of the bluff or 'Tofugja' from the campground. Printout.

Ásbyrgi canyon 66.001897, -16.513070 Parking lot. Looks like a lot of nice wooded trails at the bottom of the canyon. Should be interesting. Botnstjorn Pond: One of the trails here. Printout.

Dettifoss East side 65.83621, -16.40004 more northern & different falls. The most powerful waterfall in Europe. 500' hike to the Selfoss Falls from here.



D8: LAKE MYVATN - SEYDISFJORDUR
Hotel - Seydis.: 2h27m/196km



Grjotagja fissure: 65.6261, -16.8825. Only worth it if going close. Could take on our way out, or on our way back yesterday as is shortcut if not going to grocery store. Cave is not worth it as steep rocky climb and only visible in noon daylight.

Hverir Area: 65.6423 -16.8325 west parking lot & 65.64172, -16.80705 east parking lot.
Just a few miles out of town on south side of Hwy 1.

Krafla area: About 4-5 miles north of Hwy 1 just after the Hverir area.

Mt. Krafla Crater: 65.71743, -16.7550 parking lot to crater, one of Iceland's most interesting volcanoes. A 1-2 mile hike around the top it looks like.

Krafla & Leirhnjukur lava field & Geothermal Area: p206-207. 65.71302, -16.7740 Parking lot. Should be a 2-3 mile(?) west to the lava fields hike I think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJFvPCqtVTg

View point: 65.45737, -15.80699 about 70km SE of Reykjahlid. Worth a leg stretcher. Barren stark landscape.

Rjukandafoss falls: 65.3311,-15.0740 about 116km SW of Reykjahlid. About 1000' hike up there.

Egilsstaðir 65.26135, -14.4084, the "Capital of East Iceland."

Gufu Waterfall: 65.2410, -14.0607 About 5km before Seyðisfjarðarkirkja. Worth a stop. Right off of the hwy.

Seydisfjordur 65.2601, -14.0096. Look around the town. has a few hiking trails and sights.

Sound Sculpture hike: 65.2665,-13.9899. .Good if up for a short hike and some scenery.



D9: SEYDISFJORDUR - HOFN

Djupivogur: Charming fishing village that has 'network of trails' with black sands and nice views.
Papey: 4 hr Island tour for about $100 ea. Probably won't have time & may be closed for season.
Tourist info here: 64.657624, -14.283346. Ask about black sands? Time? Or just drive out to the end here: 64.63916, -14.27504 for a short hike.

Fremstifoss and Skútafoss Waterfalls: 64.33883, -14.93134 Good leg stretcher. About 1500' hike ow.
Might be able to drive close.

Stokksnes 64.2442, -14.9616. Only go if extra time. At the end, owner wants $12+- to enter property but 5km one way drive may be scenic. End is very photographic. Printout.

Hofn: Has two museums. A short hike on the coast is possible. 64.25821, -15.21504 Not quite legal parking but close access. Another overlook at the end of the spit: 64.24418, -15.20502


D10: HOFN - KIRKJUBAEJARKLAUSTUR (Clauster)
2h40m/200km


Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon: 64.04822, -16.1800 lots of glaciers. This is a must stop site.

Diamond Beach: 64.044285, -16.177574 near mouth of river is very interesting.

Breidarlon: 64.01445, -16.37265 Looks interesting and just off the road. Similar to Jökulsárlón but another variation.

Kviarjokull: 63.93705, -16.43545 Glacial tongue. About a mile hike to get to it.
The parking spot seems to be here: 63.9390, -16.43896. Not worth the hike as going to Skaftafell NP and it has a glacier much closer. Perhaps a quick stop or snack if have time.

Skaftafell NP: p260
Svinafellsjokull 64.0084, -16.8799 get us very (700') close to a glacier. See printout.
Visitors cntr: 64.0166, -16.9670
Svartifoss falls. 64.01662, -16.9714 Lots of columnar geology.
Nupsstadur. 63.9591, -17.57846 Church. Might be worth a quick look. About 1/4 mile off of highway.

Dverghamrar: 63.8504, -17.8601 From A.T. Right off of Hwy and probably worth a quick stop.

Systrafoss Falls & Lake. 63.7867, -18.0591 Klaustur (waterfall just behind hotel)


D11: 'KLAUSTER' - REYKJAVIK
Klausturhof Guesthouse - Reykjavik: 3h9m/257km direct.



Liki (Lakagigar) Craters: 64.0710, -18.2380 45km from hwy 1 & hwy 206. A bit out of the way.

Fjadrargljufur gorge: 63.7713, -18.1713 Amazing river canyon.

Reynisfjara black pebble beach p252 63.4044, -19.0448. Curious beach of black sand pebbles.

Skógafoss falls: 63.5277, -19.5123 If a lot of time hike to the next set of falls as Frommers says it's a very nice hike (we didn't take this due to horrific crowds).

Seljalandsfoss waterfall 63.61592, -19.99257 Nice falls to walk behind. Ditto here. There are now parking meters for these falls!

Reykjavik cemetery: 64.1444, -21.95004 Parking here is metered, but there was plenty of space.
"Hólavallagarður is situated in central Reykjavík, near The Pond and The National Museum. It is the largest 19th-century cemetery in Iceland, with its oldest grave dating back to 1838. For many, the cemetery serves as a green space within the city, offering tranquility and peace. It's rich in flora, with over 200 species of plants."
Pingvellir National Park. 64.2557, -21.1304 Earthquake area. Wonderful park about 45 minutes from Reykjavik worth several hours.
